Dr. Martín Villar (Valencia, Spain, 1922–2011) was a world-renowned hematologist who pioneered the treatment of hemophilia in Spain. In 2007, Grifols established the Martín Villar Awards Program as a tribute to his career and to recognize his contributions to the management of hemophilia. The program aimed to identify and support innovative clinical and scientific work that advanced knowledge in haemostasis.
The awards were initially granted to the three highest-ranked published papers, as selected by an independent jury. In 2017, the program was restructured to focus on fostering new research, introducing an annual dual-award model: one for clinical research and one for basic science. This shift allowed the program to move beyond recognizing completed work and instead provide financial support to advance future research projects.
Objective (Historical Scope)
The Martín Villar Haemostasis Awards were designed to promote innovative ideas and scientific advancement in the field of blood coagulation disorders, including haemophilia and von Willebrand disease.
During its final editions, the program offered a single award of EUR 50,000 to support the most outstanding research proposal in either clinical or basic research, as evaluated by an independent review committee.
